The “Green Standard” for Data Centers: ESG Values in FBox

With AI technology outbreak represented by ChatGPT and AIGC, it has driven a surge in data computing and storage demand. Data centers, as critical infrastructure, are pivoting to green, low-carbon and sustainable development. Liquid cooling manufacturers are also exploring innovative technological breakthroughs and promoting technology applications.

According to the IDC report, in the first half of 2023, China’s liquid cooling market size is about $660 million, with growth of 280%, and will reach $1.51 billion in the year. The market size is expected to reach $8.9 billion in 2027 (all in USD).

Liquid Cooling Industry & ESG Sustainability

In 2004, the concept of ESG was first proposed by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), representing Environment, Social and Governance. The core of ESG is ecological protection, which coincides with the enterprise value of sustainable development inside FBoxdata.

FBoxdata has always been an active advocate, participant, and promoter of global sustainable development. Following the trends of reduce carbon footprints and embrace clean energy, FBoxdata, a rising star in the field of liquid cooling, makes positive contributions to environment protection and sustainable development of the society with its innovative energy-saving liquid cooling solution.

Data Center Entering the Era of Liquid Cooling

Data centers plays the role of “engine” in digital economy, however its energy consumption remained high. The obsolescence of Moore’s Law pushes society up against the Limits to Growth and has caused technological transitions in data center industry as power consumption of AI data centers has increased dramatically.

There are three technological options in liquid cooling: liquid cold plate (LCP), immersing liquid cooling and spray cooling. In comparison, immersing liquid cooling has better performance and reasonable expenses in terms of space utilization and recyclability, especially in heat dissipation efficiency, which is significantly higher than the other two. Immersing liquid cooling utilizes direct heat exchange which results in higher energy efficiency and outstanding cooling effect.

The adoption of liquid cooling in data centers is gaining momentum due to its ability to deliver more efficient and effective cooling than air-cooling, especially high-density IT racks, such as data center and cryptocurrency mining center. The PUE metric does not consider IT or networking equipment efficiency and provides a benchmark to evaluate efficiency gains over time within a data center facility. Regardless, it remains the de-facto standard to measure and compare data center energy efficiency. Despite its shortcomings, PUE provides a useful baseline to assess and improve a facility’s infrastructure efficiency.

General PUE of air-cooling is 1.3, while FBox immersing liquid cooling system is 1.08. In addition to savings on devices, the total power consumption of the facility can also be reduced by 17%. Not only does FBox liquid cooling saves on electricity, but it also saves on spaces. In a data center infrastructure using liquid cooling solution, 60%-70% more servers can be deployed than before. Therefore, it is greatly improving operational efficiency and revenue growth. Also, liquid cooling data centers added circulation pumps and removed air conditioning systems, thus construction costs are reduced as well.

Co-founder and vice chairman of FBoxdata, Mr. Ping Liu, commented that traditional air-cooling solution can hardly satisfy the new standard with 1.2 PUE today. Liquid cooling in contrast, can reach a lower PUE of 1.02–1.1. In addition, FBox enables PUE auto modification with automatic PUE value altering in different temperature to maximize heat dissipation efficiency. FBox is also featuring with self-developed MCU, cooling tower auto cleaning, and open API integration that is compatible with most of maintenance systems.

Recyclability Drives Energy and Carbon Reduction Goals

In reducing carbon footprints, residual heat energy generated from liquid cooling data centers also creates value. The huge amount of heat energy generated by the 24-hour operation of the equipment can exchange through carrier and connected to air conditioning and water supply system inside buildings for energy supply purposes.

FBoxdata will continuously lead the innovation and development of liquid cooling technology, and creating an innovative, green, open, and shared future for industry and the whole society. With FBoxdata, the future is promising.
